A Montana native raised in a musical family, Jim started with the piano at eight years old and switched to trumpet at age twelve. Two years later Jim heard a recording of Clifford Brown and he was on his way.

A product of the prestigious music program at the University of North Texas, Jim won first place in the International Trumpet Guild’s Jazz Trumpet Competition in 1984.

After relocating to New York, Jim toured and recorded with a host of jazz luminaries, including the big bands of Ray Charles, Lionel Hampton, Grammy-winner Toshiko Akiyoshi, Bob Mintzer, and the small groups of Charles Earland, Lou Donaldson, Curtis Fuller and Joe Chambers.

The Toots Project

Dylan Thomas Theatre - 20mins walk from our guesthouse

When accordionist Toots Thielemans turned his attention to the chromatic harmonica, in occupied Belgium in the 1940s, he picked a chameleon of an instrument which was to lead to a musical career without boundaries. Was it something about this unique and rarely-heard instrument which took him into the worlds of bebop bands, electric funk, brazilian jazz and film & TV scores? Or was it the highly-personal voice of this soft-spoken North European gentleman which endeared him to the vanguard of American musicians and composers, from Charlie Parker to Quincy Jones, Benny Goodman to Jaco Pastorius?

In a concert programme endorsed by Thielemans himself shortly before his death in 2016, harmonica maestro Phil Hopkins joins some of the UK’s most inventive jazz musicians to explore the eclectic repertoire of Toots. Taking the audience on what amounts to a journey through popular music of the last 50 years, the setlist ranges from well-known themes to Sesame Street and Midnight Cowboy, Thielemans’ own composition Bluesette (which quickly became a jazz standard), and the results of famous collaborations with Benny Goodman,  Paul Simon, Bill Evans and many others.

The broad range of material acts as a springboard for this talented band’s extraordinary gift for improvisation, and all the musicians will be contributing specially-written compositions inspired by the work of Toots.

Tipping his hat to Thielemans’ extensive musical liaisons, Hopkins has also arranged his own favourite tunes by Norah Jones, Carole King, Stevie Wonder and others to round out this fascinating programme.

Featuring strong melodies, familiar themes and Phil’s own commentary threading the set together, this programme will appeal to audiences of all ages and interests.

Judith Nijland/Libor Smolda Quartet

Dylan Thomas centre - 25mins walk from our hotel

Dutch jazz singer Judith Nijland and Czech guitarist Libor Šmoldas are joining forces in a great new project called “Songs of Wes”.

This tribute to jazz guitar legend Wes Montgomery will tell the man’s story by bringing the original songs. Judith wrote touching lyrics and Libor made some beautiful arrangements. Together they pay their creative and musical respect to the man’s great legacy.

Judith and Libor are visiting the UK for the first time together at Swansea Jazz Festival and will be joined by a great line up.

Judith Nijland (NL)- vocals

Libor Šmoldas (CZ)- guitar

Pieter Althuis (NL) – double bass

Paul Smith (UK) – drums

Wes Montgomery

Wes Montgomery (1923 –1968) is an American jazz guitar legend. He virtually defined modern jazz guitar during the 1950s and ’60s.  He was self-taught and developed an unorthodox playing technique – using his thumb instead of a guitar pick. He influenced generations of players who followed him, guitar icons such as George Benson, Pat Martino, John Scofield, Pat Metheny and Lee Ritenour.

Collaboration Judith and Libor

Judith and Libor were introduced to each other in Australia. While separately touring down under in January 2017, mutual jazz musicians invited them to do a concert together. The collaboration was born. Back home in Europe, Judith started the project Songs of Wes and she knew right away Libor had to be the one to join her.

Honouring Wes

Judith discovered Wes’ music a couple of years ago when she heard Wes’ original Road Song. She fell in love with the song, put lyrics to it and recorded it on a cd in 2013. For the project Songs of Wes Judith carefully sorted various songs from Wes – from his early to his later years – and wrote lyrics to them.

Libor made great arrangements and even wrote his own song in honour of Wes. Libor: “Out of all the amazing guitarists across the history of jazz Wes has always had a special place in my heart. I consider him the big guru of jazz guitar. If there is one person you can learn to play jazz on guitar from it’s him! I was so glad when Judith suggested to play his music and I am very happy to be part of this project.”

Libor Šmoldas

Prague is home to one of Europe’s top jazz guitarists Libor Šmoldas.

Besides leading Czech and European musicians he has worked, toured and recorded with international stars such as bassists Jay Anderson and George Mraz, drummers Jeff Ballard and Adam Nussbaum, organists Sam Yahel, Ondrej Pivec and Brian Charette and legendary saxophonist Bobby Watson.

Libor has released multiple albums both as a leader and a sideman.

Still so young, at age of 35, Libor is widely considered to be one of the best jazz musicians in the Czech Republic and a leading representative of his generation. Critics appreciate his smooth, melodic approach backed by apparent love of jazz.

James Taylor Quartet

Dylan thomas theatre - 20mins walk from our Bed and breakfast

For a quarter of a century, the James Taylor Quartet have set the standard for the coolest sounds in funky acid jazz. On dozens of mighty albums and at their legendary gigs at home and around the world, they’ve quietly become a byword for distinguished British creativity.

But the great artists never let the grass grow under their feet, and now James Taylor’s impassioned musical curiosity has led to the most ambitious and exciting project in JTQ’s illustrious history. Allow us to introduce the new album ‘Closer To The Moon,’ the like of which you’ve never heard — because in addition to their infectious trademark stylings, the quartet have brought together the worlds of jazz and classical music in a brilliant and unexpected marriage.

From the moment the metronome counts in at the top of ‘Tick Tock’ until the conclusion of the typically atmospheric, filmic title tune, ‘Closer To The Moon’ is a unique listening experience and a career landmark. Not to mention that it sports James’ first-ever lead vocal performance on ‘Closer To You’ and the little matter of a Beethoven piana sonata.

On ‘Closer To The Moon,’ released on his own Real Self label, Taylor’s trusty Hammond and the group’s ever-alluring horns are not content with delivering a range of juicy new jazz flavours. Throughout the record, they’re also conversing with a wild array of classical instrumentation, including celeste, vibes, harp, zither, gong, glockenspiel, even tubular bells, many of them custom-built for the bandleader.
